Bought as an addon gift for my sons birthday and he loves it. Fun hands on stuff like this pull them out of their rooms off their consoles back into the real world to set fire to it! PerfectUpdateTook the wee man camping with his friend and told him the fire was his department. He needed to collect dry grass twigs sticks and branches. They took over an hour collecting the wood (we were on the beach so it was all drift wood) set up a rocked fire place and left them to it. After about 5 minutes I could see smoke and two very exited teenagers who thought they were the bees knees. Mission accomplished:)

A let down. A great product in theory and whoever designed it did a great job – unfortunately mine is completely let down by the quality of manufacture.The fit and finish is terrible with all the edges very rough sharp and plastic-y while the tinder compartment barely works as the lid doesn’t seal back on properly (easily leading to damp tinder). The whistle looks like its made of two completely unrelated pieces of plastic and doesn’t fit together at all well (leading to a quiet whistle). Think about those two issues I’ve just described and then think about the consequences in a real life emergency.Very surprising given that I’ve got a fair bit of BG and Gerber gear and all of it seems very good quality. Maybe it’s just my copy but this looks and feels like a dud and hardly anything I’d want to rely on in a real survival situation.

As a bushcraft survival and canoe instructor I bought one of these as I really liked the idea of it being a sealed unit with a waterproof tinder compartment. I immediately on receiving it changed the cord on it for a longer piece of 550lb paracord so I could wear it around my neck. The waterproofing works well I placed some cotton wool in the tinder compartment and submerged it in the bath for half an hour I took it out got the cotton wool out and got a bright clean spark that ignited the cotton wool first strike….Ok that’s the good news….I’ll be honest as a striker it’s NOT the best one out there the rod isn’t the thickest longest or best one out there and it’s not the best striker. A Swedish light my fire steel is a far better piece of kit and considerably cheaper. I really like that it’s a neat sealed waterproof unit that I can use on canoe trips etc but it’s quite expensive for what it is the quality isn’t brilliant and I think it should have a slightly bigger tinder compartment.By no means am I saying this is a waste of money just make sure this is definitely the kit you want if you just want a flint & steel to keep in your kit bag buy a light my fire one.

this is a great bit of kit a nice chunky fire starter what i like about it when not in use its all sealed a nice touch that the top comes off where is stored a ball off cotton wool tip here just rolling it between your fingers with some Vaseline makes for even better lighting the stater when sealed is water proof. it has a nice chunky feel. if you buy one not only can you have one of the best feeling s in the world making fire . to boil your water for tea coffee . it strikes that well you can put on a display to rival some fire works. it also has a whistle its loud will attract attention even wakes teenagers! also comes with a sheet full of tips on how to survive if the worse happens . i am sure some where someone will owe their life to this sheet so good on you bear for including this .. there is one thing more this great bit of kit could have had a compass set in the end saying that if you are out in the wilds or just want to light your fire of barbie this will not let you down one strike and you have fire

I enjoy wild camping and going for long trips on my mtbI don’t smoke so don’t carry a lighter however my sons room is littered with half used ones that don’t work. Being a big fan of Ray Mears and BG I thought it would be fun to try one of these and keep it in my rucksack. I tried it out shortly after receiving it and it really produces an incredible amount of sparks. I used fluff from a tumble drier and it caught fire immediately. I had a full blown fire going in minutes. What impressed me is how sturdy this item is its solid and quite heavy it looks small in the picture but its larger than you would think. This is due to the fact that you have to strike it firmly and repeatedly to get a good flow of sparks so it has to take quite a beating. It also has great little instruction leaflet with extra survival information that includes how to tie simple knots and make a shelter etc so all in all an excellent piece of kit that should last for many many years.
